Discovery 2019 Information:

What is Discovery 2019?

Discovery 2019 is a retreat for middle school students that is hosted by Asbury UMC. This retreat is unique because high school students lead the middle school students by teaching the messages during sessions and facilitating the MS Small Groups during the weekend. Adults will chaperon and serve in other capacities. This is our chance as a church to invest in middle school students to show them how much they’re loved— by us, but more importantly, by God. Discovery 2019 will begin Friday night and end at 11 AM after Sunday School, Sunday morning.

What will my student do at Discovery 2019?

The theme for Discovery 2019 is “WORD.” We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, and we believe that everything in the Bible points to Jesus— especially the Old Testament! When we realize this, and build our lives on this truth—the WORD—we believe that it can, and will, change everything about us. We’ll spend the weekend learning about the WORD through interactive experiences, skits, teachings, and games. We’ll have some free time to rest and play, and opportunities to connect with the God who made us, loves us, and has good plans for our lives! It’ll be a weekend for the books!

Who is able to attend to Discovery 2019?

All current 6th through 12th grades and college students are eligible to attend this retreat. Each paying Asbury RESET middle school student can bring a friend/guest who doesn't regularly attend for $15 (guests still need to register)!  High school and college students will be given leadership roles throughout the weekend.

When is Discovery Weekend?

March 1-3, 2019.

Can I use my earned money help pay for this retreat?

YES! We encourage it.

What if my student has food allergies?

Asbury RESET will accommodate your student’s needs. Please communicate with us about any food or dietary restrictions. The more you share with us, the more we will be able to partner with you to meet your student’s needs. We will eat at the church for every meal.

Can my student bring a friend?

Of course! If they don't normally attend Asbury RESET, then your friend gets to attend for only $15!

Can my student have their phone to call me if they want? How do I get in touch with my kid if they don’t have a phone?

Asbury RESET has a no cell phone policy on overnight trips. This is to provide your student will an opportunity to focus on the retreat and what God is doing in their lives, not what their friends are doing outside of it. All adults will have their phones available for calling home, emergencies, and pictures.

Where will my student sleep? Do we need an air mattress?

We will sleep in Sunday School classrooms at Asbury UMC . You will need to pack a TWIN SIZE air mattress or sleeping bag.  (Space is limited, so make sure to only bring a twin size air mattress, please.)

Can I send snacks?

Yes, but the snacks will be shared among the students. We “banned” snacks from the sleeping areas because of bugs. We will provide a snack room that students can raid at different times during the weekend. We’re asking female students to bring individually packaged sweet snacks, and male students to bring individually packaged salty snacks. Snacks will be dropped off at check-in on Friday night. We’re also asking each student to bring a case of water!

Will you need volunteers?

We believe that God has gifted every person with gifts and abilities that they can use to build the Kingdom of God. We love helping students and adults discover their gifting and giving them opportunities to use those gifts! Discovery Weekend is the perfect weekend for this. If you are interested in partnering with us and serving at Discovery 2019, please contact Joe Williams at for more information!

PS: Participating on the Discovery 2019 Serve Team does not mean you have to spend the night! (we wouldn’t do that to you.) But the more that stay with us overnight, the better!
